2K Hires Apex Legends Lead to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos

2K Games has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Leadership Change Follows Lukewarm Feedback

The new appointee assumes the role of studio head at the development studio following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.

Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer informed employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had revealed the requirement for a distinct vision.

The president expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed vision, aiming to address player expectations.

Trend of Strategic Recruitment

This announcement echoes a similar action taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the complete content from Ismailer's communication:

Dear Team—

I understand you all just completed your gathering - I trust you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative developers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to persist.”

Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s Project ETHOS playtest was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the requirement for a sharper vision.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to heart and reimagined the title with a revitalized goal - one that’s ready to achieve its promise to our players.

The trust in this project strengthens every day. To further the incredible progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome the new hire as the latest Director of 31st Union. After some time of talks, Ben officially joins us on next week.

Ben’s leadership and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half producing and leading some of the most well-known series in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and more recently, the battle royale hit.

I invite you all in receiving him next week. We are all excited to persist seeing the progress of the game in the weeks to ahead.

The President

Background of the New Leader

The appointee presently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Details and Vision

Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. At the time, the developers presented the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the style."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the official summary explains. "Challenge the opponents with fresh skills, challenges, and tests that evolve every match. Do you safely extract with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."

The game lacks an announced release date or platforms, but players can anticipate additional details as production progresses.
