A minimum of 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid targeting the Red Command gang in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, local authorities reported. In excess of 80 individuals were detained.

Security forces deployment
Around 2,500 police forces took part in Tuesday's operation

Fierce clashes broke out when around 2,500 police forces entered the area on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using shooting, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials stated.

The International human rights organization stated it felt "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, urging "prompt and effective investigations".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to the aerial transportation hub is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities confirmed a minimum of 50 of those killed were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Dozens of people were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.

Resident Accounts

Community members have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "combat area" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization has been growing their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and dominance over the slum communities.

Security forces said over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

Operation Background

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies comes after a year-long investigation.

Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.

Broader Context

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in the South American nation before major international events in the country.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is taking place in the northern city of Belem in November.
