European Union Maritime Forces Rescue Crew After Somalia Piracy Incident on Vessel

European Union naval forces have safely freed 24 sailors from a Maltese-flagged petroleum vessel that was attacked by sea robbers off the coast of Somali waters.

The vessel, which was carrying petrol from India to South Africa, was taken over on the recent incident when heavily armed attackers began shooting with automatic weapons and explosive projectiles before taking control of the vessel.

The crew locked themselves inside a secure safe room while the attackers assumed command of the ship.

Mission Accomplished

A Spanish warship, operating under the European Union's maritime security operation, arrived at the tanker on Friday afternoon. Special forces boarded the vessel and found all 24 crew members unharmed.

"All personnel is secure and no harm have been documented. During the ordeal, they remained in the citadel in constant communication with command center," officials announced, adding that a "demonstration of power" had prompted the pirates to abandon the vessel before the warship arrived.

Continuing Danger

Officials added that the danger level in the area "remains critical" as the armed groups are continue to be in the vicinity.

The mission involved a helicopter, drone and surveillance aircraft. Shortly before, another ship in the same area was approached by a fast boat but managed to evade it.

Resurgence of Piracy

This incident marks the latest in a series of incidents that have raised alarms about a resurgence of maritime crime in the area.

Such activity had decreased when international naval patrols and protective protocols were introduced after reaching their highest point more than a decade ago.

Nevertheless, attacks by militant groups on ships in the Arabian Sea, which have been carried out for the recent period, have caused vessels to be rerouted through the African coastline - opening up new opportunities for local pirate groups.

Incident Data

  • Multiple piracy cases of maritime crime occurred off the shoreline of the Somali region last year
  • Three hijackings were recorded among these incidents
  • Only one incident of piracy was noted in 2023

Industry professionals continue to monitor the developments as shipping companies navigate these potentially hazardous waters.
