Fireworks and a Toast to Life: Israelis Delight at Deal Bringing Back Hostages
The declaration of an agreement expected to result in the freeing of hostages held in the Gaza Strip for over 24 months has generated delight and comfort throughout the nation.
An organization which has campaigned for the return of Israeli captives in Gaza expressed “deep appreciation” for what it called a “landmark achievement”.
The agreement—still requiring agreed upon the Israeli war cabinet—involves the return of 20 living hostages and the bodies of 28 deceased captives in exchange for 250 Palestinian detainees imprisoned for life in Israeli jails plus 1,700 individuals from the Gaza region.
So far, 148 hostages have come back—most as part of earlier truce agreements—51 bodies have been recovered and eight hostages have been rescued.
Jubilant Scenes at Hostages Square
Joyous gatherings have unfolded at Hostages Square in Tel Aviv with crowds of individuals assembled before the deal being signed.
A crowd started applauding and dancing beneath US and Israeli flags—a female attendee displaying a sign saying: “We adore Trump.”
“This is a wondrous day,” the woman said.
Another, Yael, aged 50, cried as she watched the people celebrating.
“I am thrilled—it is such a comfort,” she stated. “We need to see their return home to their families.”

Families Celebrate with Fireworks
The mom and sibling of Israeli hostage Matan Zangauker lit fireworks in celebration of the news of his impending returned home.
“They are returning!... Matan is coming home!” Einav Zangauker said while holding her daughter.
Viki Cohen, the mother of Israeli hostage Nimrod Cohen, posted on social media: “My son, you are returning home.”
The delight was palpable in the streets of Tel Aviv following the announcement.
Freed Hostages Say Prayers and Toasts
Ex-captive of British-Israeli origin Emily Damari celebrated alongside another released captive Romi Gonen, uttering blessings of thankfulness, then cheering “To life”, meaning “for life”. She has been campaigning for the release of her companions, the Berman twins Gali and Ziv.
Their brother Liran Berman posted: “My dear Gali and Ziv, I adore you. You’re coming home.”
Gil Dickman’s cousin Carmel Gat was taken hostage in October 2023, and her body recovered from an underground passage in Gaza nearly a year after. He has been joining other hostage families in advocating for a deal which ensures the homecoming of everyone still being held within Gaza.
“I hardly believe this is actually happening. We have waited for such a long time and here it is,” he said.
He said he felt “broken” that his cousin would not be among those coming back home yet felt “radiant with happiness” for the families of the hostages who are at last coming back.
Eitan Horn was seized from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel together with his sibling.
Cautious Optimism from Relatives
Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law Eitan Horn remains captive in Gaza, said she experienced like she was living “a dream state”.
“We’re more than grateful to the President and everything he has accomplished for us. We feel that this could be the start of the conclusion of this ordeal, and embracing Eitan seems nearer than before,” she said.
But she cautioned that it was still too early to rejoice.
“Before the final captive is here, we won’t open the champagne. We’re going to keep fighting... until the end,” she said.
“Numerous events might occur until the last moment so this is why we’re being so, so careful. We just want to thank everyone who was involved in the work and ensure this deal is finalized... We shall rejoice only once the last captive is back home.”
Eitan was taken from kibbutz Nir Oz in southern Israel along with his brother Iair, who was freed from captivity through a truce agreement earlier this year.
