Our Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Top Place.

At first glance, this work could seem closer to an arduous university challenge rather than the latest popular music album from an artist who just had a previous hit featured an international pop icon. Split across 4 separate sections and performed in thirteen languages, we have a dizzying orchestral-influenced opus exploring female mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal transformation, often via the prism of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme handled with grounded honesty elsewhere—is shot skyward here, carried by the lush sound of a full orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive list of contributors. Its sheer audacity alone renders the efforts of other pop stars look rather laughable.

Rising Above Scholarly Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to avoid overly academic chin-stroking is nearly a miracle, and complete praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with modern styles, its scale are much greater here, and the tightrope walk far more precarious. The element that truly raises her fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is a core spirit of playfulness. Much like the iconic artist during her height, you find a captivating quality to Rosalía's singing that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she is breaking hearts apart, you still desire to be alongside her for the ride.

A Signature Moment of Exuberance

This playful spirit comes forth clearly on a stirring piano-led ballad inspired by a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, everything falls away, to reveal there's a gleeful laugh and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top string surge thuds down like comedic force. The track immediately shifts to the wild track featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The charm with this album lies in the listener never exactly understand—or even wish to know—where it is going next."

Nearly each song ends in a completely different point than where it began. One moment examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a featherlight symphony before collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls the artist's earlier rhythmic work begins off moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Art and Accessibility

A key balancing act on the album involves navigating the line between bold innovation and broad accessibility. This is no surprise that it has become her highest-charting work to break into the upper reaches of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable pop songs. A song performed entirely in English builds around a chorus that seems to collect increasingly nagging hooks as it spins upward. This feat is repeated on a different powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares with pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Across the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a blade: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

This album is popular music on a grand level, a hungry grasp for high Art amid of looming AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of sublime elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried gems that takes time to fully explore but never seem like hard work. Where some big pop albums of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a lavish feast at which the characters at the table, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
