‘Social Listening’: Unilever Aims to Harness Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
First identified more than 150 years ago on a Pennsylvania oilfield, the modest tin of Vaseline might not appear as an obvious target for social media algorithms.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a popular subject on TikTok has positioned it at the vanguard of an advertising revolution, where major corporations are investing heavily in content creators and devoting less capital to advertising goods in legacy broadcasters.
From Oil Rigs to Online Hacks
Originally produced in the 1870s by a chemist, Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers using on their skin with a residue from oil extraction. Currently, a wave of user-generated videos have recorded its extensive utilization in “life hacks”.
Hailed as a solution for polishing footwear or extending perfume longevity, and also a remedy for creaky hinges. It has even been deployed to stop the scourge of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Capitalising on the Conversation
Spotting its digital renaissance, strategists within the corporation boosted the tips by asking their own scientists to test them and providing creators with the outcome data.
Claims that Vaseline reduced the sensation of spicy food on lips were confirmed. Similarly supported were ideas it could prolong perfume and restore leather handbags. Claims that it would bleach teeth or make eyelashes longer were disproven.
The ‘Digital Ear’ Approach
Billboards and TV ads would once have been the cornerstone of its marketing push. However, this online trend has led decision-makers to ramp up funding for content creators.
This observation of social channels to guide corporate planning has been termed “social listening”. The company's chief executive, newly named, has stated the intention is to spend half of its colossal advertising budget on digital creator content.
Adapting to New Consumer Habits
Selina Sykes, who is spearheading the social media effort, said the company was just evolving with contemporary approaches of engaging audiences. She said interacting online “without spoiling the atmosphere” was essential.
“How can companies join discussions credibly? That’s always what we’ve been trying to do as brands, dating to when neighbors chatted over fences and talking about what they used.
“The trend is shifting from a mass communication approach, where we would just broadcast out … Today, it's numerous dialogues, various groups. The evolution of platform algorithms means that these groups seem specialized, however, they are large.
“Ensuring your product is discussed by users, talked about by other people, this builds credibility and connection. Influencers are vital for this. We are expanding this endorsement system.”
A Revolutionary Change in Media
The approach indicates seismic changes occurring in how media is consumed, with the youth demographic allocating more attention to digital networks than legacy broadcast and print media.
The transition is visible in falling revenues for traditional media advertising. Across Britain, advertising income for leading TV channels have declined by over six hundred million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms since 2019.
Influencer Marketing Expansion
Additionally, it points to a merging of functions as large companies almost become production houses themselves, linking up with numerous influencers to promote their goods.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Obviously there’s a flow of audiences away from some legacy media and they’re spending a lot more time on digital video and image apps than they are consuming linear broadcasts or printed matter.
“Numerous corporations inform us audiences believe endorsements from the creators they engage with more than they trust ads. It's an ongoing shift.”
He said brands could also save money by targeting content creators over expensive broadcast campaigns, which also enables easier content adjustment to test effectiveness.
Such methods are increasing. Advertising spending on influencer marketing is increasing four times faster than total media spending. Stateside, it has more than doubled since 2021 and is expected to hit multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
TV's Lasting Role
Despite the huge changes, executives said they believed broadcast ads retained significant importance to play, as networks still held the capability to drive countrywide discourse.
Sykes said: “Among the most effective advertising investments is still the Super Bowl. The issue isn't broadcasters claiming: ‘Oh, we’re not relevant any more.’ It’s about who’s capturing attention … I think there’s 100% a place for them.”
