The Reason this DNC Refuses to Release its Post-Mortem Report on the 2024 Race: A Deep Dive.

This move from the Democratic National Committee to suppress the release of its own post-election analysis concerning the 2024 election seems remarkable however not surprising. Opposed to unpleasant candor, the Democrats' governing body operates more like a communications shop rather than a political organization devoted to building a volunteer base to secure victories.

A Climate That Avoids Dissent

Unwilling to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has stayed within the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Releasing the findings could have demonstrated that party leaders actually want to foster open debate about the errors that paved the way for the former president to become president again. Instead, the leadership is moving forward as if there is little to be learned from the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? Should the answer be negative, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," an explanation which was presented to justify concealing the analysis.

Critical Problems an Autopsy Could Have Addressed

An autopsy report worth its salt would confront certain uncomfortable matters. This encompasses:

  • Voter Disengagement: Failing to retain among millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket during the previous election proved pivotal in the close recent race.
  • A Choice to Seek Re-election: The determined decision of the incumbent to stay in the race, alongside a last-minute exit, has been criticized as denying the party's base the chance for a competitive nomination process.
  • Failing Core Democratic Voters: While facing rising costs, the electoral effort reportedly ceding to elite contributors and not managing to challenge the role of profit-seeking.
  • The Gaza Factor: An unwillingness to adjust an approach on the situation in Gaza is cited as losing key demographic groups, particularly with young people, Arab-Americans, Muslim voters.
  • A Decline in Young Voter Backing: Research shows a major drop-off of votes for the candidate from the youth electorate.

A History of Evasion

The decision to withhold fits a pattern to avoid uncomfortable facts. It echoes an episode in which virtually every Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to a sitting president's determination to seeking another term right up until a poor televised debate forced a reversal.

At the same time, a significant majority of the electorate had been repeatedly informing pollsters that they did not want that candidate to run again.

Campaign Spending Questions

A substantive report could examine questions about campaign spending, including how much money were directed to insider consultants and ad buyers during a campaign that managed to spend an enormous amount in a short period.

The Larger Implication

At its core, the suppression of the official autopsy is symptomatic of a deference toward the established hierarchy responsible for a losing electoral effort. The signal to rank-and-file members – including millions of small donors – is that they cannot have a right to see the lessons party chiefs have learned based on an analysis based on feedback from all states.

An organization incapable to publicly examine where it went wrong finds it difficult to climb out of the rut that proved so advantageous to the winning candidate.
